The Solar Pavilion is a children’s learning pavilion, enclosed with a responsive skin that changes according to the daily movements of light and darkness. The project explores a design process where the detail is the generator for the configuration of the skin. The structural fins contain both the energy source and emanating source for light, dissipating it during the beginning hours of the evening via integrated thin film and LED technology. The intelligent skin is a performative structure and enclosure system integrating existing technology to define a self-sustaining envelope as a model for future design possibilities. The landscape is pulled into the pavilion, as one can walk through it freely, without ever leaving the surface of the grass. The form in its simplicity reacts atmospherically to the environment around, while responding to the simplest process of life – that of sleep and awakening.
